Guest Post- A Retail Hell Story

For those of us who have worked retail, we have some idea what it's like- in fact, many of us have been there, or have at least witnessed events that those working in retail have to put up with on a day to day basis. I once myself worked a job in retail, and I can tell you, it's not easy.

Kerry, from Signing Life joins me as a guest blogger today to share an event from when she, herself, worked in retail. Thanks, Kerry, for helping me out.

I shall start by saying that I know I probably shouldn't have been this angry over this occurrence, but at that point in my retail HELL career, I felt I could not help it, nor did I care.
During one of my last months in retail hell, I dealt with the rudest, most inconsiderate devilspawn I've ever encountered, while I was closing ALONE as USUAL. They may have even beaten out the bitchy six-year-old first grader I took care of at a summer day camp (a story for another day).
These three little demon hellspawn seemed to be all sisters, or at least related in some way. The oldest was not more than twelve years of age, the middle one eight or nine, and the youngest about six. Two “adults” --and I use that term extraordinarily loosely-- presumably at least one mother, were accompanying them. As the older females shopped, the maniacal children were running around the department yelling, being obnoxiously loud, and knocking things off shelves and off racks, leaving them on the floor, apathetic to the fact that I now had to clean up after their piggy little aggravating antics like the little jerks they were.
During their shenanigans, the oldest apparently picked up some shirts to try on, as she bombarded the fitting room with her and her sisters' presence. Every damn time they closed the door, they SLAMMED it shut. Which is not only disturbing to my ear drums, but if they broke it, no one else could use that room until it gets fixed, which was probably never, leaving a longer line for other customers and more headaches for us.
As she's trying things on, she's yelling through the door at her mom or whoever who is sitting RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DAMN ROOM. It's very close quarters, you can hear each other freakin’ whisper in there.
When she was finally finished, she waltzed out of the room like the diva she thought she was, and continued to run around with the younger ones.
As I saw that she brought NOTHING out with her, I went in to check the room, KNOWING that everything was left in there.
Sure enough, like I have some kind of retail hell psychic curse, there are the shirts, every single one of them, thrown all over the chair, tangled together, and not even one of them was hung back up.
Apparently, I must have “angrily” began cleaning up after them (what a surprise), because after I had brought the shirts out and hung them on the rack right outside the damn doors and began folding a table of pants nearby, where I wasn't in visibility range of the fitting rooms, the mom said something about cleaning up after themselves for me --whether it was positive or negative, I have no idea.
I don't know what the girl said in response to this, but I heard her mom say “As she was cleaning up, she was hanging them up really hard.”
The girl said something I couldn't hear, probably extremely rude, to which her mom must have told her she was being too loud, because she immediately followed it with, “Good, I hope I'm loud enough so she can hear me.”

OH REALLY?! WHY DON'T YOU SAY THAT TO MY FACE THEN, BITCH?!
All her mom said was, “You have an attitude,” but did NOTHING to correct her. They left the fitting rooms, and were in the department for another five minutes or so. Every time they saw me, knowing that I was already pissed, the middle one looked at me and just grinned with this devilish evil satisfaction on her face.
When they finally left, as they were already in the AISLE walking away, of course not to my face, the middle one said loudly enough knowing I would hear hear, “I'm so mad I have to clean up when it's my job!”
WHAT THE #$%&?! Now I'm absolutely infuriated. I wanted to slap that acid-tongued little monster and her bitchy mouth and evil grin right off her spawn of Satan demon face.
First of all, yes, technically my job was to clean the department, but there was a rack to hang the merchandise outside the rooms for a damn reason -- as I am sure just about every store has -- and IN THE DIRECTION YOU ARE ALREADY WALKING when you leave. It takes an extra TWO FREAKIN’ SECONDS! The rack literally states, “Back on the rack! We'll take it from here.” Just because “it's my job” doesn't mean you have to be a dirty little barbaric pig and leave your crap everywhere. And at twelve years old, I'm pretty damn sure you should be able to READ THE DAMN SIGNS on the back of EVERY door that kindly request you to bring everything out. They didn't care in the least bit that they left me a mess. If their moms or whoever they were weren't there, I would have gotten fired that day for bitching out a bunch of kids. I didn't feel like getting into a fight with parents. Those are the people I want to follow home, tear apart their houses and just leave it there and walk away because “it's their job” to clean it because they live there.
The worst part of the whole thing is that the “adults” did absolutely NOTHING to stop or correct them from acting the way they did or voice their spitfire bitchy attitudes. And that, my friends, is why everyone is an asshole.
My solution to this night – thank God it was my friend's birthday and she invited everyone out – was to meet some friends at a bar and dance out my frustrations.
My only satisfaction came from knowing that they will all probably have to work the same type of job in a few years, and karma will bite them in the ass. Hard.
You know what, screw it, I don't care. I wish I would have bitched them all out. Freakin’ little jerks. I hope they swallow glass.

Things I Know- I have a blog

Another mostly lazy week. We did move most of the stuff back into my room, except the crap I'd like to weed through first to pull out the stuff I don't need. No pictures- lots of boxes and mess. Once things are sorted...maybe. There's still a lot of work to be done

Things I know:

  • When you have no timeline, you lose track of time. I wrote a calendar for September and started it on the wrong day. Seriously. *facepalm*
  • My blogoversary is on Monday. Wheeee!!!!!!!!
  • It takes a lot of work to move stuff back into a room...more than it does to move stuff out of a room. Especially when it's the same room.
  • People don't always respond right away. Be prepared for this. It's because people usually have lives. Unlike you, Ashley. Get a life, Ashley!
  • It's not very nice to berate yourself. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen. See above.
  • I like research. I don't hate research. In fact, I love research. I hate statistics. For the longest time, I thought I hated research, when really, it was the statistics part that I hated. Thank you, Dr. Bron, for helping me sort through this dilemma. Now I can actually say I love research!!! (She sorted it with me on twitter...thanks!!)
  • People can care-more than you think- through a computer or phone- overseas or a few states away. The internet has broken down walls, county lines, state lines, and country borders. There are no longer the same boundaries as before- just remember to keep some boundaries. Boundaries are good, just be reasonable.
And that's all. Being cooped up isn't really doing much for my knowledge. I don't know much more than I did last week. At least I know something....

Huzzah!!!

Maybe I kept a drummer......

We all know the 12 days of Christmas song, I'm sure. And there are tons of parodies out there for that particular song- my brother was just playing the terrorist's 12 days of Christmas before he left for work. Every time I hear that song or a parody of it, though, I'm reminded of this song we learnt in middle school that is ALSO a parody of that song.....it just makes it a big more twisted.

  1. The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight; and so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite! Then with a single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge
  2. The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves and very gently wrung the necks of both the turtle doves
  3. The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup. I had to use the three french hens to make some chicken soup
  4. The four calling birds were a big mistake for their language was obscene
  5. The five golden rings were completely fake and they turned my fingers green.
  6. The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay. I sent the whole darn gaggle to the ASPCA
  7. On the seventh day what a mess I found, all the seven swimming swans had drowned.....
  8. The eighth day after Christmas, I gathered up the........
    1. 12 drummers drumming
    2. 11 pipers piping
    3. 10 lords-a-leaping
    4. 9 ladies dancing
    5. 8 maids a-milking....
(well, I may have kept one of the drummers) and sent them back COLLECT!  I wrote my true love, we are through love, and I said it in so many words, your Christmas gifts were the (four calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pair treeeeee) birds!!

I'll never forget singing that in choir class. I also enjoyed the Carol of the Bells, to which I know all parts (1st and 2nd soprano AND alto), and I still don't resent it. Actually, I like the ones we sang in choir for some reason, and have a distaste for the rest. I sang in choir for many years- 2nd grade all the way until graduation. Then I didn't have a choir to join. I miss it, and I want to go back to it. *sigh*

It's come to my attention that I haven't bought anyone anything for Christmas yet, and my guilt is kind of starting to set in. I haven't had a job in over a year now, who's gonna want to hire me now? And I'm completely broke. I was so incredibly stupid for ruining what I had. Now that I realise it, there's nothing I can do about it, which is unfortunate.

It's been a depressing time, not having a job. I feel a bit inadequate, and kind of like a loser. I don't even have my degree yet, and I was supposed to (originally) graduate with the class in May '09. Now I'm going to be graduating with kids who were freshmen/sophomores when I graduated high school, and it's not because I skipped college or anything, but because I took so damn long. :( Not having a job, though, has given me more time to advance to a place where I'm much closer to graduation, and I'm starting to feel a little more confident, yet scared about it.

I don't know if I've mentioned this yet, but I'm considering grad school, to become an LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) or LMSW (licensed masters' of social work). My parents don't seem to think I can do it. My aunt, though, who works at the University of North Texas, seems to think I can do it. Now, she works at a university. My parents never went to college. Who am I to believe? So I've been asking around. Some people do think I can handle it, the majority actually, but some know that I have my limits and it gets pretty bad and intense when I lose control of something.

Money would be an issue, because grad school is expensive! Although there are teaching positions that I could take, because a lot of graduate students take on the role of teaching some of the undergrad classes. Also, if I stay at UTA, I can waive between 17 and 20 credit hours, I think it is, meaning I'd knock out a LOT of classes right away. Plus I'd be familiar with the university, professors, buildings, classes, etc. and I enjoy learning. Plus I really want that Masters' degree! That night, my fortune cookie read: "You should tackle that task you've been considering".

Now, I know that fortune cookies from these restaurants are mass-made and they just have a bunch of phrases they put out there, but what are my chances of pulling THAT one on the night I had been discussing grad school with my aunt? I'm not a big believer in astrology or tarot cards or anything like that, or even fortune cookies, but....I think the stuff is interesting, and I'll probably have a blog on that on a later date.

Anyway, back to the topic, we put our tree up tonight, and I got out my little ghetto iridescent tree with my little blue and white ornaments and set it up. I finally found a practical use for my biology book- to stand on to make myself taller when I need to reach something!! LMAO. So our family tree is up and has lights, my ghetto tree is up (but is not going to have anything under it, sadly). Oh, and I start my internship Thursday. I'm uber nervous!

Well, it's getting late, so I'm gonna go, since I'm pretty tired, and it'll probably be good to start adjusting my body clock to match those of 8-5 people, since I have that internship. Honestly, I think everyone should conform to a later time, but some people are morning people, which I've just never understood- another potential future topic. Until then, auf weidersehen!
